The Geico Gecko Is A Fan Of March Madness Basketball

Even though I write about Geico commercials on here all the time, I tend to overlook the Gecko. Probably because he’s been in Geico ads since 2005, long before I started this blog. Here’s one that we’ll be seeing a lot of in the next few weeks. The Gecko (voiced by Jake Wood) is sitting alongside the play-by-play announcer at his first NCAA Tournament. He’s enjoying it, and even gets too into the action to talk much about Geico. He implores the players to set picks and shoot the 3. But alas, it seems Gecko may have gotten too animated in celebrating, as he possibly pulled a hammy. He needs ice…just one cube!

This UConn Huskies Fan Loves Buffalo Wild Wings

I love the NCAA Tournament too, but staying at Buffalo Wild Wings for that long sounds a little excessive. I think I’d get constipated. Or possibly the other thing. The art school crowd seems to be outraged, though it’s true, art schools don’t generally have Division I sports. But yeah, she probably shouldn’t be abandoning her kids like that. The mom is played by Erica Piccininni. I’m personally a bigger fan of B-Dub’s other commercial with a Kentucky fan excitedly phoning his wife about his new friends. The line about not hanging out with the Wisconsin guy “because of last year” is a smart touch. In that one, the husband is Tom Larochelle, while the wife is played by Sigrid Owen.

Fox Sports 1: Gus Johnson And Bill Raftery Broadcast A Birth

I’ve always been a fan of Gus Johnson. He’s enthusiastic without being a windbag and the NCAA Tournament just doesn’t seem quite right without his dramatic calls. I have definitely daydreamed about Gus narrating my mundane daily routine. But having Gus Johnson broadcast a baby’s birth seems quite uncomfortable. And that’s exactly what happens in this new Fox Sports 1 ad for Big East basketball with Gus and his partner Bill Raftery. Combined with yesterday’s Old Spice commercial, I think I found the most consecutively creepy posts on this blog. But Old Spice’s was somewhat funny too…this is just unpleasant.

1/8 update: Annnd looks like it’s been pulled.

Axe Apollo: Bryce Drew’s Buzzer Beater Is Upstaged By An Astronaut

It’s that magical time of year again…March Madness. Brackets, Cinderellas, and most importantly, a reasonable excuse to start drinking at noon on a weekday. In 1998, Valparaiso University’s Bryce Drew hit a buzzer beater to upset Ole Miss. It was one of the most memorable moments in NCAA Tournament history, and now 15 years later, Bryce Drew is the head coach of Valpo, who will try to shock Michigan State. And now Axe Apollo has a new commercial capitalizing on this shot. It’s in a similar vein to Axe’s Super Bowl spot…meaning that the real action is amusingly overshadowed by an astronaut. Nothing beats an astronaut ever, apparently.

Buffalo Wild Wings: You Can Never Have Too Much March!

The NCAA Tournament Field has been announced, so that means March is in full swing. Buffalo Wild Wings (AKA B-Dubs, B-W3) is a place that tends to be busy during any major sporting event. In an amusing new campaign, B-Dubs makes a compelling case for March being the best month of the year. During other months, you might be caught in an unfortunate anniversary situation, get an accidental and unwanted birthday dancer, or knock out a eye-patched veteran in his good eye. March is up there, but April is still my favorite.
