Drink Guinness And Discover An Indonesian Ski Resort (Wait, What?)

If you’d never seen snow before, how would you react to it? You’d probably have a reaction of wonder, joy, and playfulness. That’s what happens in this Guinness ad created by London’s Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO. Rumor has it that someone built a ski resort high in the mountains of Indonesia. So a group of friends decide to search it out for themselves. The spot takes a little time to get going, but the visuals are fantastic, and the ending payoff is pretty great too. What makes it even better is that according to the agency, this really was the first time the guys had seen or touched snow, and their reactions are genuine.

Why Is This Guinness At An Empty Chair?

Guinness isn’t a company you’d think would have emotionally engrossing ads, but they’re on a roll after last year’s wheelchair basketball commercial and now this one. In the new spot, a full Guinness always sits at an empty chair at an empty table. It’s only towards to end where we realize why. Good stuff.

#7: Guinness’ Wheelchair Basketball

Friendship exemplified. I’m a sucker for surprise endings, and this spot has a good one. Friendship and twist endings will continue to loom large as the list goes on.

#6: Kmart’s Ship My Pants

Immature, punny, and also the funniest commercial of the year. I can only imagine the “eureka” moments the writers had with it. Kmart also had followups with “Big Gas Savings” and the Dickensian holiday version “Ship My Trousers”, but the original was the best.

#5: Dick’s Football

Dick’s Sporting Goods had two great commercials this year with a similar, ultra-realistic style. The first was a baseball ad, the second for football. Honestly, it was a bit of a tossup, but I think I liked the football spot a little more. A friend who played high school football said it gave him flashbacks.

Guinness: Wheelchair Basketball, With A Twist

“Dedication. Loyalty. Friendship. The choices we make reveal the true nature of our character.” So goes the voiceover for this powerful, expertly shot new Guinness commercial featuring a wheelchair basketball game that isn’t quite what it seems. I really like it…the copy, cinematography, and music (The Cinematic Orchestra’s “To Build a Home”) all work for me. Most of all, I like the message about the importance of friendship and inclusion. Some are finding that message to be troubling, including this blogger who has a well-written response about why she is not a fan, to put it mildly. So what do you think?
