That Singing McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish Commercial

Lent starts next Wednesday, and for McDonald’s, Lent is Filet-O-Fish season. In fact, Mickey D’s sells almost a quarter of the yearly Filet-O-Fish sandwiches during that 40 day period. So if you haven’t already you’ll soon be seeing that long-running commercial where a Billy Bass-eque fish incessantly sings “Gimme back that Filet-O-Fish!” It’s been on for at least 10 years now. Annoying, but obviously quite catchy too. And here’s the interesting origin story of the Filet-O-Fish in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Arby’s Has A Song About 2 For $5 Fish Sandwiches

It’s an Olympics-tinged, “We Are The World”-esque song, performed by someone who sounds like Justin Bieber. And as it turns out, the song is all about meat and closes by advertising Arby’s 2 for $5 fish sandwiches. Haha.

Klarna Gets Smooothly Hypnotic In These Ads From Sweden

Sometimes you’ll see an ad that seemingly has little to do with the product or business that it’s advertising. This campaign for Swedish e-commerce payment brand Klarna could fit that description. But you know what? The spots, created by DDB Stockholm, are so good that it doesn’t even matter. In them, a fish smooothly slides down a slide and on a floor, a block of cheese is smoothly sliced, and an odd sea creature smooothly swims. All of this ties in (sorta) with Klarna’s tagline of “Smoooth payments.” And yes, their smooth has 3 O’s. It’s utterly bizarre, but with the hypnotic visuals and music, it’s pretty great too.

Chevy, Santa, And The Deer (Err…Fish) Hunter

Chevrolet has like 8 billion new commercials featuring Santa Claus as a salesman named Nick (Get it? St Nick…) But here’s the standout one. The funny one where the man says he hunts deer and then realizing he’s talking to Santa, changes his response to fish. Good stuff.
