Verizon’s Joy Is Back For Christmas

Verizon’s popular character Joy (played by Britt Lower) returns in a new spot, this time walking through a holiday market. Also, Thomas Middleditch takes a little girl’s popcorn without asking. How rude!

John Lewis Takes A Trip With Elton John In Its 2018 Christmas Advert

John Lewis always has one of the holiday season’s most anticipated ads, and now it’s out. This one is considerably different…it starts with Elton John playing the piano. We then see him performing and go back in time to different points in his career. “Your Song” is playing throughout. That’s nice…but where exactly is this going? Well, stick around because the payoff is worth it. It’s a touching tribute to Elton John, who’s in the midst of his farewell tour, aptly titled Farewell Yellow Brick Road. And the hashtag #EltonJohnLewis is a clever one.

Heathrow’s Bears Make Their Triumphant Holiday Return

Heathrow’s Bears (officially named Doris and Edward Bair) have been a big hit since being released a few years ago. And of course they’re a big hit…who can resist cute and cuddly bears? This time around, the Bairs are just like old Americans, and they’ve moved to Florida. It’s nice and warm in December, but the homesickness starts to creep in…what with frozen turkey dinners and a sad Christmas tree that gets blown over by the ceiling fan. After Skyping with their family, it’s settled. They’re coming back home for Christmas! Aww. Paul Young’s “Every Time You Go Away” is the evocative soundtrack to this adorable spot, created by Havas London.

Chrysler Pacifica And Kathryn Hahn Get Super Dorky In Their Caroling

It’s November now, which means we’ve officially entered Christmas/the holiday season, whether you like it or not. These Chrysler Pacifica commercials with hot mom Kathryn Hahn have all been quite dorky (sometimes delightfully and sometimes cringey), but I think this one might be the dorkiest. Ladies and gentlemen, I believe we have a strong contender for “whitest commercial of all time.” The hip-hop themed carol is “Lit Christmas” by Scott Stallone ft. MC Rellik.

New York Lottery Shows An Adorable And Determined Bodega Cat

One of the best parts about life in NYC are the bodegas, which are often home to cats, employed partly for their friendliness and partly for their vermin killing. In this charming spot from the New York Lottery, we see a bodega cat, Cyrus, who tracks down his store’s owner at home after closing and gives him an unexpected Christmas present while he sleeps. Cyrus even takes the bus and climbs down the chimney like Santa Claus…adorable. The song is a cover of “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)”, performed by Julia Stone.

Verizon’s Joy Returns For Christmas

This fall, Verizon’s much-played “Yee Haw” commercial featured a character named Joy, played by Britt Lower. Now Joy’s in a new Christmas ad with her niece. Her niece wants a rabbit, while Joy wants the new iPhone. This one’s getting hammered on YouTube, though that seems more because of Verizon’s role in the net neutrality fiasco.

After Santa And Red Faint, The Yellow M&M Unexpectedly Saves Christmas

The holiday season is a time of traditions, and the advertising world is no different. Numerous holiday commercials are played year after year, to the point where it would feel weird not to have them around. Off the top of my head, I can think of classic spots from Hershey’s Kisses, Campbell’s Soup, and Folgers. Another one is the M&Ms ad where  Santa Claus meets the Red and Yellow M&Ms. You’ll recall that Santa and Red both faint upon realizing that they do exist, and Yellow is left concerned. This one’s been playing since 1996, and now French agency CLM BBDO has created a followup. The doofy Yellow sets out to save Christmas, but runs into some problems. But as it turns out, he’s brought people together and made it even better. Here’s more from Adweek.
