Tuesday Throwback: Cadillac And Neal McDonough Can’t Believe Other Countries Take August Off

It’s now July 31, which means that other countries (i.e. European ones) will be taking long vacations really soon. Maybe…gasp!…even the whole month of August off. But here in ‘Merica, as Neal McDonough explains in this 2014 Cadillac ad, we don’t do that. We’re too crazy driven for that. This was a hugely polarizing ad, and your opinion of it probably lies with your political outlook. If you’re a conservative, it seems more likely that you’d agree with the spot’s consumerist and capitalist viewpoints, and argue that this is why the United States has historically been an economic and innovative powerhouse. If you’re a liberal, you might argue that this commercial underlies why Americans are so deeply in debt, stressed out, overworked, and generally have a lower quality of life than other developed nations. What’s my opinion? I think this ad is smarmy as hell. Ford made a good response to it too.

Ford Takes A Shot At Cadillac With This Environmentally Conscious Commercial

Earlier this year, Cadillac debuted a very polarizing ad for its new ELR. I didn’t cover it on this blog, but here it is.

Many found the rambling monologue of the rich middle-aged guy (played by Neal McDonough) to be insufferable. I tend to agree with that assessment. His speech plays into stereotypes of Americans as aspirational, Type A personalities who spend all their time working, and then die. Of course, people who liked the commercial note that much of the copy points to the reason why America has been so successful economically over the years, and why many people have been able to buy luxury items such as Cadillacs. But would the blustery blowhard in the spot really be interested in an ELR, a plug-in hybrid? I kind of doubt it.

So Ford created a direct response.

I like Ford’s a lot better. Sure it’s a bit smug, but it’s got a few things going for it. First, it has a real person as the protagonist instead of a fictional character. The speaker is Pashon Murray, founder of Detroit Dirt. Pashon explains why she does what she does, and that it’s for the betterment of the country and the world as a whole. And the last line “that’s the upside of giving a damn” is an absolute killer. I think this one has to go to Ford.

 

That Cadillac Commercial With “Stacy’s Mom”

When I first saw this Cadillac ad during football, I thought I had seen it before. I remembered it as a car commercial from maybe 10 years ago…when “Stacy’s Mom” was a new song. Turns out it was a 2005 Dr. Pepper commercial which also featured a mom coming out of a car. So not exactly, but it’s good to know that I wasn’t going crazy. And in case you had forgotten, “Stacy’s Mom” was performed by Fountains of Wayne. And the mom is played by Magali Amadei.

Looking Back: Kate Walsh Is Turned On By Her Cadillac

This Cadillac CTS commercial starring Kate Walsh came out in 2007, but it’s still one I remember vividly. If I wrote Commercial Society back then, I have a feeling this would have been one of my most popular posts.

A great ad and weirdly sexy. I love Kate’s voice…she sounds a little bored when she’s describing the car’s features. But it all leads up to the ridiculous (and brilliant) tagline “When you turn your car on, does it return the favor?” I Googled that phrase, and it was all over the place after the spot debuted. We finish with a suggestive close-up of Kate’s (or some female’s) high-heeled foot, and hear the powerful sounds of Hum’s “Stars” as the car zooms off. I’ve watched a lot of commercials since this one, but it takes a special ad to stand out.
