Macy’s Has A Back To School Rap Commercial

It’s the end of July, and one of the hottest topics in the United States is what to do about school. Honestly, there’s really no good solution and many will be unhappy either way. But capitalism marches on, and so brings the back to school advertising. Macy’s especially needs the sales. So regardless if the young ones will be returning to the hallowed halls of education or logging in virtually, Macy’s wants your kids to be ready. And what’s the catchy and jazzy rap song they use here? It’s “The Life of a Scholar” by 3 Titans.

This Mall Commercial Is Both Hilariously Crappy And Hilariously Catchy

It’s for East Hills Mall in St. Joseph, MO. If I lived there and had to see this constantly, I would probably throw my boots, backpacks, and new shoes (purchased at East Hills Mall, of course) at the TV. 835,000+ views and counting for a stupid local commercial that’s only been online for a few days though? Wow. The power of viral video.

Target’s New Back To School Commercials

Last year, Target had an obnoxious (and obnoxiously catchy) back to school campaign that I just hated. This time around, I like Target’s ads a lot more. They show kids in typical school situations with instrumental backing of famous songs like Queen’s “Under Pressure” and “Another One Bites the Dust” , Outkast’s “Hey Ya”, and the Rocky theme. I actually saw another one featuring Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It”, and I can’t find that one online now. Maybe some prudes objected to a song so blatantly about sex being used in a back to school campaign. Anyway, these should be on a lot in the upcoming weeks, so I’m glad that I kind of like them.

Tuesday Throwback: Staples Goes Back To School

It seems a little crazy since it’s only July 10th, but back to school sales are already in full swing. But with the trend of schools starting earlier in summer, I guess it makes some sense. All of this reminds me of a commercial that I grew up with: this Staples back to school ad. Made sometime in the mid-’90s, every year this spot appeared, it reminded that school was starting soon. It might actually still be on the air. Watching as an adult, it’s hilarious to see the juxtaposition of the gleefully dorky dad with the thousand-yard stare of the kids. The ironic use of “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year” just adds to the fun. And a final thought: maybe I’m just looking through rose-colored glasses, but it seems strange now that going back to elementary/junior high/high school was such a drag. Compared to job hunting with a liberal arts degree in a crappy economy, that sounds positively swell.

Commercials I Hate: Target’s Back To School

There’s a place in the world for campiness, and sometimes it can be entertaining. But these Target back to school ads are just awful.
