That Singing McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish Commercial

Lent starts next Wednesday, and for McDonald’s, Lent is Filet-O-Fish season. In fact, Mickey D’s sells almost a quarter of the yearly Filet-O-Fish sandwiches during that 40 day period. So if you haven’t already you’ll soon be seeing that long-running commercial where a Billy Bass-eque fish incessantly sings “Gimme back that Filet-O-Fish!” It’s been on for at least 10 years now. Annoying, but obviously quite catchy too. And here’s the interesting origin story of the Filet-O-Fish in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Tuesday Throwback: The Chili’s Baby Back Ribs Jingle

If you’re of a certain age and someone mentions Chili’s Baby Back Ribs, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll think of the classic jingle, introduced all the way back in 1986. The jingle was brought back in 2017, but with far less ubiquity, and emphasizing Chili’s other offerings too. I can’t find the original, but here’s an early-2000s version with NSYNC. And also here’s a video with the guy (appropriately named Guy Bommarito) who wrote the jingle. Interestingly enough, Guy Bommarito has never eaten one.

Geico Hits The Mother Lode Of Soft Serve Ice Cream

I could probably write a blog just based off Geico commercials. Anyway, in this one, a hard-working oil crew just hit the mother lode. Except this mother lode is much tastier and less valuable…it’s soft serve ice cream, of course. A guy comes by with a wheelbarrow of cones too. And when a rainbow geyser comes spraying out of a derrick, they’re really in good shape….because sprinkles!

Liberty Mutual Presents The LiMu Emu (And Doug)

In its newest campaign, Liberty Mutual brings us a ’70s-esque buddy cop parody featuring an emu (the appropriately named LiMu Emu), and his human partner Doug. As LiMu gets confused after seeing his own reflection and vomits up change in the office, Doug explains some of the merits of Liberty Mutual. They’re pretty dumb but mildly amusing ads, created by Goodby Silverstein & Partners. Will this have more, less, or the same popularity as Liberty Mutual’s campaign with people talking in front of the Statue of Liberty? Only time will tell. If you’re wondering, Doug is played by David Hoffman.

King’s Hawaiian Goes To Yoga

If you’ve ever had King’s Hawaiian, you know how addictive those sweet little bread products can be. So the woman in this spot takes proactive measures. After being asked why she brought King’s Hawaiian rolls to yoga, we then cut to her family ransacking the house looking for them. Turns out they’re safer with her at yoga. The last few seconds of her coming back to the destroyed house and being scared by her husband’s ceiling foot are amusing too. The yoga women are quite attractive…anyone know who they’re played by?

State Farm: Chris Paul, James Harden, And Oscar Nunez “Jump Around”…While Ducking

This State Farm campaign with Chris Paul, James Harden, and Oscar Nunez is a fun one. In the latest spot, they’re hanging out and the Houston Rockets’ bear mascot Clutch is in the kitchen making guacamole. Suddenly, House of Pain’s “Jump Around” starts playing on the basketball game they’re watching, and Clutch…gets a bit out of hand. At least the windows still look good. Haha.

The Return Of That Reese’s Easter Bunny Commercial With “Let’s Get It On”

Christmas is typically the holiday that brings ads that are re-aired yearly, but this Reese’s Peanut Butter Egg commercial with the Easter Bunny is also a recurring one. I’m not sure exactly how long it’s been on, but I found a version on YouTube from 2011, so it’s been a while at least. I’ve always wondered why Reese’s doesn’t use the bunny to advertise its actual Peanut Butter Bunnies…would that be too dark and meta? Commercial standby “Let’s Get It On” provides the soundtrack.

Geico: A Lobster Relaxes In A Hot Tub With This Newlywed Couple

The lobster seems like he’s in such a good mood…ohhh, there’s a jet. The woman from the newlywed couple seems befuddled that they’re sharing a hot tub with a lobster, but the man is ultimately more pleased that they saved hundreds of dollars on their car insurance with Geico. Our lobster buddy quips that he’s afraid of commitment, because he’s been boiled a lot. Then he ducks underwater when the chef comes looking for him. Some astute YouTube commenters notice that the lobster gets redder as the commercial runs, which is a nice touch. The man in the hot tub is played by Tristen J. Winger, and the woman is Tyra Colar.

KFC: The New Colonel Sanders Is…RoboCop

In the last number of years, KFC has had so many actors playing Colonel Sanders in its commercials that its not even worth mentioning. But here’s a notable new Colonel: RoboCop. If he told someone the secret recipe, he’d have to kill them. It’s just a ha ha ha funny joke though…right? According to this longer video, set up as a faux-news story, the Secret Recipe was transferred by RoboCop to the Bahnhof Underground Data Center in Stockholm, Sweden (once home to WikiLeaks). There it lies in a nuclear bomb shelter 100 feet under a Stockholm mountain, built to survive armageddon. Very safe!

Burger King Is The KFG (King Of Flame-Grilling)

Well, well, well. Burger King is making quite the advertising push of late. Here, the King dresses up like Colonel Sanders to promote Burger King’s Grilled Chicken Sandwich. “The King always outranks the Colonel” is quite the commercial zinger (pun sort of intended).
