Verizon’s Joy Has Fun At A Bonfire

Verizon’s popular character Joy (played by Britt Lower) is back in a new spot. This time, she’s at a bonfire at the beach. Only problem is that her friend Daryl can’t get the music going on his phone. He shakes it around (does that look weirdly phallic to anyone else?), but nothing. That’s when the annoying Thomas Middleditch comes out and makes a snarky comment. Joy then whips out her new iPhone on Verizon. With six months of free Apple Music, the party gets started. Initially, Daryl plays some metal, but Middleditch tells him to pick something more appropriate. Bumpin’ hip-hop beats it is! The beat is “Bamboo” by P-Lo, by the way. They both sound good, Daryl. Verizon also has ads with Joy and Thomas where they use famous song lyrics in dialogue. There’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”, “Call Me Maybe”, and “Me Myself and I”.

Pacifico Beer’s Beautiful Beach Ad

This Pacifico Beer commercial isn’t new…it was released 6 months ago. Still, I just saw it for the first time and I had to include it on here. The story of the son releasing his father’s sand on the Baja beach that he loved is a poignant one. Is it just sand, or is it his father’s ashes too? Seems open to interpretation. And that music is just great. It’s “Your Hand In Mine” by Explosions in the Sky, which is probably best known for its use in Friday Night Lights. Beautiful work from Pacifico.

The Song From Apple’s iPhone XS Commercial

Apple tends to use striking music in its commercials, and this song in its ad for their new ridiculously big and expensive iPhone (ironically called the XS) is no exception. So what is that song? It’s “Nothing Burns Like the Cold” by Snoh Aalegra featuring Vince Staples.

9/28 update: Were you looking for the song from this iPhone XS ad where everything grows incredibly big? That song is “Catch My Breath” by Confidence Man.

DraftKings Sportsbook And Charles Barkley

On a plane, “Dr. Aftkings” observes Charles Barkley taking a close look at his phone and diagnoses him with a bad case of “single game fixatia.” It’s where you’re too focused on just one game. The cure is Draftkings new Sportsbook app. See, sports betting has been legalized in a few states with many more following, so it makes sense that DraftKings would be getting in on the act.  Charles already has the app though, he already won, and now he’s watching a documentary on horseshoe crabs. Also, Dr. Aftkings isn’t a real doctor. Is Charles Barkley the best spokesman for gambling? On the one hand, he’s famous, super charismatic, and a well-known gambler. On the other, he’s lost massive amounts of money on gambling. Hmm. By the way, Sportsbook is only operating in New Jersey right now, but presumably it’ll go to more states soon.

AT&T Has The Ed Helms Of Devices

AT&T is promoting the Samsung Galaxy Note9, as a tour guide at the AT&T Innovations Lab calls it the perfect device for entertainment and productivity. A mustached man calls it the “Ed Helms of devices”, because he’s both very entertaining and very productive. Shockingly enough, that man is Ed Helms. The attractive tour guide is played by Michelle Ortiz. Also, shouldn’t she be wearing safety glasses like everyone else?

Tuesday Throwback: The Budweiser Clydesdales Pay Tribute To 9/11

This Budweiser 9/11 tribute commercial was only aired once but it’s a touching piece of work that’s still remembered to this day.

That Pizza Hut Commercial With Excited Steelers Fans

Wrong, you’re not raising her right, because she roots for the Steelers. Yeah, I’m a Bengals fan. By the way, father and daughter are played by a real-life dad/daughter duo: Joshua and Jaidyn Triplett.
