Old Spice’s Dadsong

Earlier this year, Old Spice debuted an utterly bizarre commercial called “Mom Song.” It was the kind of ad that was instantly memorable and lit up the Internet from lovers and haters alike. It was odd and creepy, but pretty brilliant too, and won a lot of awards. Now, Old Spice has created its followup: Dadsong. It’s still pretty weird, though we’ve come to expect that from Old Spice. He’s a man! He’s a boy!

Old Italian People Hate Pizza Hut

Pizza is a traditionally Italian food. Pizza Hut is decidedly different than that standard, and they’re changing even more with their new “The Flavor of Now” menu. So in this new campaign, Pizza Hut shows its new offerings to grumpy old Italians, who don’t like it, or any other “modern” things. I’m not really sure what the point of this ad is, but it’s quite lame and fake.

There Have Been Some Amazing Christmas Ads Coming From The UK

Maybe it’s my associations with A Christmas Carol or Love Actually, but England, and London in particular, has always seemed like a magical place during the holidays. Perhaps that has influenced my views of these fantastic commercials from the UK. Since I’ve been bad with posting lately, I’m just going to touch upon a bit of the British goodness that has come out recently.

Awwww. This adorable story featuring Monty the Penguin is for John Lewis. I think what makes it even better is that we realize the penguin love story is all in the young boy’s imagination, adding a whimsical twist. The song “Real Love” by John Lennon (and sung by Tom Odell) is a perfect fit. This one was released less than two weeks ago, and already has more than 16 million views on YouTube. You’ve probably seen it.

Sainsbury’s has a beautiful spot that seems more like a mini-movie than an ad. It dramatically tells the story of the 1914 Christmas truce between British and German soldiers during World War I. Adweek has more info about the video. It’s also been a big hit, racking up nearly 10 million views in six days.

DirecTV’s Painfully Awkward Rob Lowe Offends Shy Pee-ers

DirecTV has been running this campaign starring Rob Lowe. In it, a normal version of Rob Lowe has DirecTV, and a deficient one has cable. The first one had creepy Rob Lowe. I didn’t write about it, but you saw it. Now, it’s painfully awkward Rob Lowe. And it’s stirring up a lil’ controversy. You see, painfully awkward Rob Lowe can’t go with other people in the room. Paruesis, often called shy bladder syndrome, is a condition that affects about seven percent of American citizens. Here’s an interview with Steve Soiffer, head of the International Paruresis Association, where he explains why this commercial is offensive. The spot makes me laugh, but it has a whole lot of angry comments on YouTube.

Southwest Airlines Makes It Cheap To Dance During Wedding Season

Wedding season can be quite an expensive time, especially if you have to fly. Southwest Airlines wants to ease this stress, so you can focus on the more important things, like actually having fun. Though it’s a bit weird to me that this spot is playing now…I always thought of “wedding season” as summer to early fall. The dancing woman is played by Alice Wetterlund. She really goes all out with her Elaine Benes-esque moves. And the slow dancing kid who tries to grab her ass is priceless. Funny ad.
