Actresses from Comedy Central’s hilarious show Workaholics are getting a lot of commercial airtime lately. There’s acerbic boss Alice (Maribeth Monroe) in this new DirecTV spot. And Alice’s awkward assistant Jillian (Jillian Bell) is in another office setting during this Samsung ad. I hope she learned her lesson about taking credit for other people’s work. Pu pu platter!
This is exactly the same as Samsung’s original “Work Trip” spot. But the fact that it’s Mrs. Claus making a dirty video for Santa makes it much more uncomfortable.
Comments from friends: “NSFW = Not Safe For Workshop”, “She is such a ho-ho-ho”. Heh.
And I guess while we’re at it, here’s the Samsung commercial with a possibly drunk guy dressed as Santa falling off the staircase railing. If I wore a Santa suit, it would probably end up like this.
I’ll admit that I’ve seen this one a few times without really paying attention. I like Samsung’s campaigns, but some of the spots tend to be too similar. But I just watched it and paid attention. Saucy. The wife’s eyebrow bounce is great. It’s burning up YouTube…more than 5.6 million views since being posted four days ago. The wife is played by Margaret Emery.
Well guys…the iPhone 5 comes out tomorrow. If you’re not a loser camping out, you probably won’t be one of the first to get it. I’m sure the new iPhone is great (it’s already setting sales records), but I just don’t understand camping out for consumer products. Don’t get it. And this is the angle Samsung takes with their new commercial for the Galaxy S III. It’s a continuation of “The Next Big Thing Is Already Here” campaign, created by 72andSunny.
Funny stuff. His parents? How lame. Just as lame as waiting in a long-ass line. In summary, they’re both great smartphones, and it really comes down to image.
This supremely relaxing and pleasant commercial is for Samsung’s Galaxy Note. Which is notable, because the first Samsung Galaxy Note commercial, aired during the Super Bowl, was anything but relaxing. I kinda liked it because of the goofy energy, but this is much different. “Alone in Kyoto” comes from the Lost in Translationsoundtrack. That’s a movie I should see sometime, but haven’t gotten around to. I’m pretty bad at seeing movies.
This iPhone 4S commercial does a nice job of simplifying the idea of cloud computing with iCloud. I like the song too, but I can’t actually find who it’s by. When I do, I’ll put it up.
Something tells me that a church choir wouldn’t be singing a song rumored to be about masturbation. And it’s a classic but it also feels strangely symbolic that HP, a company with some recent troubles, would use a song from almost 30 years ago.
The Super Bowl is the biggest night in advertising, but it can also feel hollow. This year, rates started at $3.5 million for a 30 second spot. So really, a lot of it feels like going to a bar and just seeing dudes throwing around money. The ads are mostly just for show….I don’t think anybody is going to buy a car or discover “Doe-ree-toes” simply based on a commercial. And at $3.5 million+ per ad, any corporation who would skip the Super Bowl and instead HIRE NEW WORKERS would get infinitely better PR. Alright. Now that I’ve gone on my mini-rant, here’s my pick for top 4 Super Bowl commercials.
#4 Doritos “Man’s Best Friend”
I had to pick from a number of spots for the #4 position and this came out on top. I originally had picked the other Doritos spot (“Sling Baby”), but after after thinking about it, “Man’s Best Friend” is wittier and less predictable.
Hugely entertaining and over-the-top. At first, it seems like a typical male fantasy but it becomes surprisingly sweet with a great twist ending.
#1 Budweiser’s “Return of the King”
As a former history major and a fan of period pieces, I loved this commercial. The artistic direction is beautiful, music from The Natural works well, and it only has two words in it (and a lot of cheering). I know the beer snobs are gonna snark “Budweiser? They got that excited about crappy Budweiser?” Shut the hell up. If you had to drink disgusting bathtub gin for 13 years, you’d be ELATED for beer, Budweiser or otherwise. And it’s true. Anheuser-Busch was one of the few American breweries to survive Prohibition, and they sent a case to the White House (delivered by Clydesdales) right after repeal.
Some other notable commercials:
Chrysler’s/Clint Eastwood’s “It’s Halftime in America”
Probably the most discussed/publicized Super Bowl commercial this year. It’s been getting a lot of political implications…some are calling it the best Obama re-election commercial that will be made. This one was a big hit with advertising experts. I had mixed feelings about it. The copy is quite well-written and fairly inspiring. But to me, it was a little draggy and boring. I know Clint Eastwood is a legend and his voice leads gravitas to the commercial, but I feel like at varying points he sounds like he’s going to (1) die, or (2) yell at me to get off his lawn. Chrysler’s Eminem spot was my favorite of last Super Bowl and this is of a similar vein. It’s something I SHOULD like, but just turned out OK in my eyes. And this is a 2 minute spot starring Clint Eastwood. It must have cost an incredible amount of money. Remember what I said in the beginning of this post, about how money might be better used by HIRING WORKERS? That severely diminishes the message for me.
Bud Light’s “Rescue Dog”
Not incredibly original. But it’s cute and does have a nice message supporting rescue dogs.
Samsung’s “Thing Called Love”
I really liked the first spot of this Samsung campaign. But they kept going with it, and the campaign felt stale pretty quickly. Yes, we know that people who stand in line for consumer products are losers and the Apple cult people are really annoying. So I was surprised by this one. Using a song that was semi-popular like 9 years ago (albeit, one I’ve always liked) is a little odd. It turns into a lot of fun, though. I don’t think it’s an amazing advertisement, but one that I really enjoyed watching. Looks like a great party. And a Brian Urlacher cameo!
Apple has some great, innovative products. But so do their competitors. This commercial doesn’t so much criticize Apple or the iPhone as it does the cultish following that Apple has. The Apple fanboys…the types who will camp out for days to get the newest iWhatever, while at the same time mocking Black Friday shoppers as brainwashed, consumerist sheep. “But that’s like different, because Apple speaks to my individuality as a person!” Give me a break. So now Samsung’s ad for the Galaxy S II. I love it.
The iPhone is never mentioned by name, but of course we know that’s what it’s about. There’s so much snark…I hope even Apple fans can look at this with a sense of humor. “I could never get a Samsung. I’m creative”….”Dude, you’re a barista.” That’s a late contender for exchange/witty retort of the year in the commercial world. And let’s be honest: the Samsung Galaxy S II will never overtake the iPhone, so they might as well have some fun.
Bonus videos: A fewmore “The Next Big Thing” commercials.
