Internet Explorer 9′s Striking Song

Close to six months ago, I wrote about a new commercial for Internet Explorer 9 with a memorable song. A newer version has been playing for a while now.
In the original post, I stated “the song is “Too Close” by Alex Clare, which just debuted at #68 on the Billboard Hot 100 due in large part to its use in this commercial.” And now? “Too Close” just entered the top 10 and still looks to be rising. It also spent 4 weeks at #1 on the Alternative Songs chart. Looking at the #1 Alternative Songs this year, at least four others were in national commercials before hitting big. Those include Fun’s “We Are Young” (Chevy Super Bowl commercial, “We Are Young” was also #1 on the Hot 100), The Black Keys’ “Gold on the Ceiling” (NCAA March Madness), Grouplove’s “Tongue Tied” (iPod Touch), and the current Alternative #1, “Ho Hey” by The Lumineers (Bing). Has use in advertising become a passport to alternative rock stardom?
