The Milk Campaign That’s Got Some Ladies In A Tizzy

Last week, I wrote a post where I talked about the Got Milk? campaign, one which I hadn’t really thought about in years. It was coincidental that the very next day, news broke of a new California Milk Processor Board campaign created by the same advertising agency, Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. The advertisements focus on milk’s purported benefits of reducing PMS symptoms, albeit in an interesting fashion. It’s quickly become one of the year’s most buzzed-about and stupidly controversial campaigns. You can visit the official site here. My reactions? Cheeky and amusing, but not really sexist.

Soon after, one of my former college classmates wrote a few op-eds about the subject on Ms. Magazine’s official blog. The columns attacked these advertisements for portraying women as irrationally angry shrews, and men as oafish idiots. She also addressed the (more valid, in my opinion) question of whether milk actually does help the symptoms of PMS. At the bottom, there’s also a petition to end the evil milkmen from using this ghastly campaign.

OK. I could write a lengthy entry about the follies of political correctness or gender roles in advertising. Instead, I’ll craft a response that’s short, direct, and stereotypically male. Calm the FUCK down, and have a SENSE OF HUMOR! And yes, I realize the irony of using a capitalized F-bomb in a “relax” message. Think about if we removed all media that any segment of the population found offensive. Wouldn’t be a whole lot left, would there? So in summary, I repeat: Calm the FUCK down, and have a SENSE OF HUMOR! Seriously. Try it. You’ll find that the world is infinitely more enjoyable if you do.

7/21 update: The campaign has been pulled. Score this one for the irrationally angry. Weak.

A Beer Ad That’s As Beautiful As A Blue Moon

Most memorable beer commercials are either stupid or funny. Beautiful isn’t really a word you hear associated with them. Enter Blue Moon.

This gets bonus points since Blue Moon is such a tasty beer. And here’s a few more artfully crafted commercials from Blue Moon.

The Next Michael Jordan, Brought To You By Geico

This is a commercial from a new Geico campaign. And it’s pretty damn funny.

Scholarship! I also like the pastel, almost washed-out looking colors of this ad.

1800 Tequila: It Isn’t A Game Changer

Tequila isn’t scotch. 1800 isn’t even that classy of a tequila. And Michael Imperioli, despite being on The Sopranos, isn’t anywhere as interesting as The Most Interesting Man In The World.

What’s That Song? Part IV

Artist: Natasha Bedingfield, Song: “Recover”

State Farm gets serious in this spot. A powerful commercial, especially in light of recent natural disasters.

Artist: Annie Little, Song: “Fly Me Away”

This ad for Amazon’s Kindle isn’t new, but I saw it this morning and wondered about the song. Soft, whimsical, and extremely pleasant. Interesting that I like this song that much, because Annie is also the voice of something I definitely wasn’t a fan of.

Sonic’s Psychedelic Trip

Saw this on AdFreak today, and it’s too good not to include here.

Great commercial. It seems Harold and Kumar would love Sonic too. Cheesy tots sound real nice about now. Not surprisingly, the visuals were inspired by The Dude’s dream sequence in The Big Lebowski. Just listen to the song too. So hypnotic. Delightfully bizarre, but it definitely works.

Verizon Has Perhaps The Worst Commercial Currently Airing

Yesterday, I asserted that AT&T beats Verizon in advertising. This is a prime example.

Awful. Just awful. I don’t care about this woman and I certainly don’t want to hear her rambling thoughts.

Blast From The Past: SunnyD’s Big Mystery

Years later, the question still burns. WHAT WAS THE PURPLE STUFF?

Also, I miss Dave Chappelle.

Got Swag? You Would With AT&T

Remember Got Milk? Created by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners in 1993, it’s one of the most successful brand campaigns in American history, and was introduced in this classic commercial directed by Michael Bay. The spot humorously depicted a situation where milk was needed, and it also enlightened the great majority of people to the Burr-Hamilton duel (which coincidentally took place on this day 207 years ago).

In their new commercial made by BBDO New York, AT&T presents almost the exact opposite scenario. AT&T really beats Verizon when it comes to advertising.

I wonder how the writer decided on Edgar Winter. I had to look up who he even is.

SoBe: Flavored Water And Kate Upton’s Cleavage

Yeah, so it doesn’t really have anything to do with SoBe water (unless you see a double entendre with “mango melon” flavor). But who’s complaining?

Kate Upton sure is a looker. Though it does feel somewhat strange to be lusting over someone born in the ’90s (she’s 19). SoBe also has a staring game, which I will win eventually.

Bonus video: Kate Upton does The Dougie.
